HIGH LOW
Mixing a high end brand or trend with a casual piece or favorite vintage find.
High-low can be an intimidating trend to pull off – especially if you don’t know what high-low is. But it’s exactly what it sounds like – A mix of something considered ‘high’ whether it be a brand, or look – with something ‘low’: IE – sneakers with a dress, monkstraps with jeans. Are we on the same page? Patricio and I live for a good high-low. So on a recent visit to the San Antonio Public Library. (Patricio and I googled the proper term for this library, and he claims that its referred to amongst the people of San Antonio as the ‘Big Enchilada’) Regardless – we had an exciting afternoon exploring their walls of books.

Here’s a fact – I love sequins. Sequin dresses, sequin shirts, sequin everything. But the best thing about sequins is when you can dress them down. While sequins are revered as a fabric of the night, sequins are just as cute during the day. ASOS always does great sequin dresses, which is where I snagged this gold number. Described as a t-shirt dress, it has a box fit that I’ve belted in the past. But why belt when you can throw a flannel over and boots to make this a fall look? Knee high boots and a simple necklace rounded this look out, and while it was a little avant-garde for the library, it’s a look that’s comfortable and a true ‘fun’ outfit.

Patricio went a little more casual with his vintage Wrangler’s jacket, which he snagged in Marfa after a run-in with one of our fashion-muses Jenna Lyons. Paired with J.Crew’s 770 chinos for a looser fit, this was an effortless look tied together with Alfred Sergeant Monk straps. Patricio has moved into a place of relaxed fit pants owning his closet. With retailers like J.Crew, ASOS and Banana Republic shying away from tailored pants and moving towards this relaxed era, you’ll be seeing more and more of this on the runways and with those willing to revamp their closet.
High-low can be a tricky thing to pull off – but as strange as it might feel to pair sneakers with your favorite dress, vintage denim and dress shoes – It’s a look that’s interesting and ‘in’ right now. Not to mention incredibly comfortable and easy to incorporate into your everyday wear. So how are you high-lowing this Fall?
