Tea and espresso – two beverages guaranteed found in my hand throughout the day. There are certain responsibilities you have once you become an aficionado of these two drinks – the right equipment, knowledge of the best product, and a desire to find different ways to consume. Most Teavana teas have been in my teacup at some point, and making matcha has become second nature. On a warm day, nothing is better than an espresso affogato – that was until we swapped out the richness of those shots for bright, light matcha. Making this treat is incredibly easy (as long as you’re not prone to burn boiling water) – and can be enjoyed when you need something light to get you through a breezy afternoon. This recipe calls for two scoops of ice cream, but there's no judgement if you accidentally scoop in three.
Matcha
Vanilla Ice Cream – Blue Bell (Were you expecting anything else?)
Tea Kettle
Bamboo Wisk
Matcha Bowl (a mixing bowl will suffice)
Matcha Scoop (or a spoon)
Bring 1/2 - 1 cup water to 175°F - any hotter and your matcha will burn (The amount of water doesn't have to be exact, the less water the creamier your affogato will be)
Dry whisk 1-2 scoops of matcha, consistency of matcha should be a fine powder
Add a small amount of the water to the matcha power just enough to create a matcha paste
Once all dry matcha has become a paste slowly add the remaining water while continuing to whisk to avoid any clumping or settling.
Your matcha is done!
Add your ice cream in your mug and get your camera ready because the sight of the creamy white hues intertwining with the bright green matcha should be on your Instagram - stat
The Matcha Affogato is a simple twist to your traditional morning cup of matcha usually reserved for the laziest of Sundays - but don't let us limit you! If you want your matcha to have more complexity try using freshly brewed flavored teas instead of water to bring extra hints of flavor to your affogato. Teavana's Blueberry Bliss is a great starting tea I've found adds just the right amount of sweetness to your matcha, and the hint of blueberry is a dream mixed with the vanilla ice cream.
